SOUTH AFRICAN WALVIS BAY

SIGNAL COMMAND

ANODISED

1980-1994

Walvis Bay was formerly part of South West Africa and as such was administered by South Africa. At this time the South African Army were responsible for all military affairs. The Command 'Button' on this particular cap badge has a whale above the outstretched hand of 'Jimmy'

From the time Namibia (Formerly South West Africa) became independent in March 1990 there continued to be a dispute between South Africa and Namibia and relations between the two countries were uneasy.

With the elections of 1994 and the end of apartheid, pressure was brought to bear on South Africa by the ANC until on the 1st March 1994 Namibia assumed full control over Walvis Bay as part of their country.
